What is publishing administration?
A publishing administrator registers your songs — the compositions, not the recordings — with collection societies and pay sources around the world, collects the royalties they generate and pays them to you. You keep ownership of your songs; the administrator works for you rather than owning a share of your copyrights.
Is publishing the same as distribution?
No. Distribution pays for the recording: the streams and sales of your tracks. Publishing pays for the song itself: its writers are owed separate royalties whenever it is streamed, broadcast, performed or synced. Most artists collect the first and miss part of the second. Music royalties explained.
Do I need a publisher if I write my own songs?
If your songs are streamed, played on radio or TV, or performed live, they earn composition royalties. Some reach you through your local collection society; much of the money from other countries and from digital services only reaches writers whose songs are registered there. An administrator registers them for you.
How do I collect publishing royalties from Spotify and YouTube?
Streams generate composition royalties as well as recording royalties, and they are paid to collection societies and publishers, not to your distributor. Registering your songs through an administrator is how that money finds you.
What is the difference between mechanical and performance royalties?
Mechanical royalties are owed when a composition is reproduced — streamed, downloaded or pressed. Performance royalties are owed when it is performed in public — on radio, TV, in venues and, in many countries, on streaming services too.
How and when am I paid?
